Look of the Day: Emma Watson

Look of the Day: Emma Watson

It’s been a long time since I’ve done a full-on smokey eyes look… as soon as I swept the black over my lids, I realized just how frequently I’d been going for a more natural (or toned down smokey eyes) look.

Anyway, doing this look was fun because it is/was so dramatic, and plus, I went to watch Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince that night, so it all sorta fit together.  ;)  Unfortunately, I didn’t get any great shots, so again, you’ll have to trust me when I say this looks better in person.  I included two shots (one taken with my Nikon DSLR and the other with my Nikon point-and-shoot); the one with the DSLR shows the look more accurately, whereas the one with the p&s washes out the colors and makes it look more glittery than it actually is.  Since I was in a rush to get to the restaurant, I didn’t have more time to take any other shots.  Oh well.

The Tools

So, first of all, here are the tools I used:

  • Clinique concealer (don’t remember the actual name of it)
  • Chanel Double Perfection Fluide (matte) in Beige
  • Chanel Poudre Universelle Libre Natural Finish Loose (loose powder)
  • Jemma Kidd Chic Cheeks Powder Blush in New York
  • Anastasia Brow Powder Duo in Medium Ash/Medium Brown + Studio Fix
  • Chanel Ombre Essentielle Soft Touch Eyeshadow in Lotus and Tatou (black)
  • Chanel Le Crayon Khol Intense Eye Pencil in Noir (black)
  • Chanel Aqualumiere Sheer Colour Lip Shine in Ipanema
  • GIVENCHY Phenomen’Eyes + false eyelashes
  • Brushes: MAC #272 (I think this has been discontinued?), Chanel #2, Chanel #3, stila #28

And here’s the look…

The Look

I swear, next time I plan on doing a tutorial, I’m going to make sure I have ample time to actually take a good picture.  D:  Sigh!  All right, so here are the steps for achieving this look (which is great for a night out but definitely not appropriate for the workplace).

First, take the concealer and blend it in under your eyes and anywhere else you need it (I like to use the Sonia Kashuk foundation brush, which I don’t really like as a foundation brush but do use to blend concealer).  After blending in the concealer, add the matte foundation (I use the Chanel concealer brush, which I love).  At this point, you can either add the loose powder or wait until you’ve applied eyeshadow; I personally like to add loose powder right away, but it’s good to wait, as well, incase you’ve got some stray eyeshadow around your eyes.

Next, take the angled eyeliner brush and go to town on your eyebrows.  In this look, Emma Watson has striking, defined brows, so even though it may seem overpowering, it’ll even out as soon as you add the black to your lids.  Anyhow, I like to use the lighter brown at the beginning of the brows, adding the darker brown to the rest.  I went over the brows quite a few times to get that angled/defined look.  (And to keep your brows in place, use the Studio Fix wax pencil.)

Now it’s time to add the black!  First, take the Noir eyeliner and add to the top (as close to the lashes as you can get) and on the bottom.  It doesn’t matter if this looks messy, as you’ll be blending it a bit in a moment, anyway.  Using the MAC #272 (or any large brush), now take the Tatou eyeshadow and apply generously on your lids (with a small amount under your eyes), making sure to blend, blend, blend (that’s the key here; no harsh lines)!  This next step is optional – typically, I always use the Chanel #3 eyeshadow crease brush for darker colors, but since I knew I’d be using black all over, I just used the larger brush.  Anyhow, you can now emphasize the black a bit more on the crease, using this brush to sweep back and forth with your eyes open (so the added black is visible).

If your eyeliner has been blended away a bit (which I’ll be surprised if it isn’t), go over it again, and add your little flick if wanted.  :)  Next, take the Lotus with the Chanel #2 brush and softly add it above the black.  When that’s done, pack the Lotus onto the brush a little bit and add it to the brow bone to add more definition to your brows.

At this point, you can curl your lashes and generously apply your mascara, allowing it to dry (since you’ll be applying falsies later).  As for me, I like to add the blush at this point (and do the fake lashes last).  Using a highlighter brush (I like Sonia Kashuk’s), take the JK New York and contour your cheeks – since it’s such a neutral color, you’ll have to add a bit.  Then, taking a blush brush (or using this same brush), you can sweep it onto the apples of your cheeks (smile if you need to).  This’ll basically give your face a glow; you do not want it to be very pigmented since you want all features except your eyes/brows to be toned down.

Finally, add false lashes (I’ll assume you already know how to do this), and finish off by patting the Chanel lipstick (or any other pale color you have) to your lips until you have just enough color for it to be slightly noticeable.  Remember, you want everything to be matte, so stay away from the lip gloss.
